First win of the new season for Kidsgrove Athletic

John Naisbitt reports on Kidsgrove's 3-0 win at 1874 Northwich.

Kidsgrove bounced back from a lethargic display on Saturday with an emphatic win at 1874 Northwich in their first ever game at home in the NPL.

Manager Scott Dundas brought in Spencer Gunnell and William Whieldon and Jack Bromfield moved into midfield and Lewis Bergin at left back.

Kidsgrove took the game by the scruff of the neck from the start and the home defence had to make some hasty clearances. Kyle Blake and Kieran Brown both blasted over the bar from range while 1874 tried to raid up both wings but Bergin and Byers both did great work in closing down any threats. Kidsgrove, playing with the slope, looked dangerous and Brown and Adu Gyamfi both had shots blocked.

Kieran Brown broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute with his first competitive goal for the club. Diskin’s cross from the right found Gyamfi and his shot was blocked but fell to Brown 12 yards out who smashed it into the bottom corner.

Northwich almost levelled minutes later but Harrison saved with his outstretched leg from Scott McGowan

Kidsgrove continued to press and Brown doubled his tally when Aghayere in the home goal parried Whieldons effort and the delighted Brown slotted in from a tight angle at the far post.

Northwich pressed at the start of the second half after making two substitutions at the break but the visitors held firm though Mitchell’s stinging effort just swerved past the post.

Kidsgrove relied on breakaways in a game which threatened to boil over at times and Brown almost grabbed his hat trick when he cleverly cut outside his man only to see his shot saved by the keeper's legs. A series of corners for the home side were dealt with by a resolute defence and as the match went on it was Kidsgrove who looked more likely to score.

In injury time, Jake Lovatt, on as a substitute for Whieldon, found the top corner from the edge of the box. An excellent performance by a hard working Kidsgrove side who gave the new boys no space at all. A totally different attitude than Saturday and Grove are up and running.
