Anthony Malbon scored a second-half double to help Grove finish the season with three points whilst confirming Rugby Town’s relegation at Butlin Road.

Kidsgrove started the match brightly with some calm passing play. Lee Pickerill’s great run down the left nearly resulted in the opening game but his shot hit the post and gathered by Louis Connor in the Rugby goal.

However, it was the hosts who opened the scoring after Levi Rowley finished Trey Braithwaite’s cross at the back post.

Following the goal, Lewis Bergin played through Marc Grocott but his shot was easily saved by Connor. Kyle Diskin also came close for the visitors after his low free-kick hit the side netting.

The home side began to unsettle Grove’s defence following a deflected cross which wrong footed Chris Martin and hit the bar.

Harry Clayton came closest to levelling the match before half-time after he hit his shot from distance but it smashed against the crossbar.

Eight minutes after the interval and Grove found their equaliser after a poor clearance from the Rugby defence fell to Pickerill who was able to his volley and give Connor no chance.

The goal kicked Kidsgrove into life and they were able to get their passing football going. The calm football played in Grocott again but he shot narrowly over the bar.

With nearly ten minutes of the match left, the comeback was complete after Malbon pounced on Connor’s parry to slot home.

Just a minute later and the captain was at it again this time wonderfully lobbing the ball over Connor and all but securing the three points.

The results means Rugby Town will be playing football in the Midlands Football League next season.

Whilst for Kidsgrove, the three points confirms their highest league finish since the 2010/11 season.
