The Grove played their final game of 2021 on Monday and agonisingly slipped to 2-3 home defeat against local rivals Leek Town in ‘El Staffico’.
This concluded a disappointing December which saw the grove record three defeats and a draw. Furthermore, the manner of these results had been under scrutiny by some, but the performance against Leek gives Kidsgrove fans hope for a resurgence as the new year approaches.
Before hosting Leek on Monday, the Grove had conceded 8 goals in 2 games and had only found the back of the net once.
However, against Leek, Scott Dundas had clearly motivated his players and despite coming away from the clash empty handed, the Grove definitely gave a good account of themselves to a packed Autonet Insurance Stadium.
Kieran Brown and Anthony Malbon were on target on Monday and handed the Grove the lead twice, but on both occasions Leek Town fought their way back into the game before Daniel Trickett-Smith fired the visitors to Victory.
Scott Dundas will be eager to rectify his sides defensive frailties as the Grove’s positive and
expansive forward play was nullified by defensive errors that led to Leek replying instantly after Kidsgrove had taken the lead.
What is certain is that Dundas will believe that a similar performance to Monday’s clash will go a long way towards helping the Grove claim a much needed three points.
Turning our attentions to our next opponents, Newcastle Town currently sit 16th in the Northern Premier League – West, only three points behind the Grove in 14th.
Castle have struggled recently and have failed to win a league match since early November.
However, last time out Robin van der Laan’s side fiercely battled against league leaders Marine and despite losing 3-2, Castle will be buoyed by this performance.
It is imperative that Kidsgrove do not underestimate their local rivals as it is undeniable that Van der Laan will have his players fired up in an attempt to claim local bragging rights and potentially even leap-frog the Grove in the league table.
For the Grove a positive start to the year would go a long way to boosting morale after a tough run of results and three points would put them to within one win of the top-half with plenty of football still to be played in 2022.
